News Update: Barclays Releases Motorola Q1 Earnings Preview, Sees High Android Sales

4/14/2010-Barclays Capital Equity Research issued a note to clients early Wednesday morning providing an earnings preview for Droid-maker Motorola’s (NYSE:MOT) first quarter earnings, which are scheduled to be released Thursday, April 29. Barclays analyst Jeff Kvaal said they believe feature phone volumes continued to decline during the company’s fiscal first quarter, but they “consider better Android volumes the key metric for this turnaround story.” Kvaal said better-than-expected demand for the Droid and Backflip should generate Android sales figures beyond their 1.5 million estimate and may even come in flat QoQ at 2.0 million. With regard to the company’s second quarter, Barclays sees broadening availability pushing unit sales higher, and they are forecasting 2.5 million in unit sales. For the full-year 2010, Barclays is estimating 11.0 – 14.0 million in unit sales. However, Barclays sees feature phone weakness continuing, and conservatively modeling the first quarter down 40% and the second quarter down a little over 10%, ex a flattish iDEN. In terms of gross margins, Barclays expects Q1 margins of -12% to improve through 2010 before reaching profitability in the fourth quarter on 4.0 – 4.5 million Android unit sales. Regarding Motorola’s EMS visibility, Kvaal said they see it improving and they are comfortable with their down 15% Q1 sales estimate, but they noted that “Home remains challenged,” with lower China capex pressuring the Home and Networks unit.
